The stringent BS6 emission norms are on its way with the government issuing an ultimatum stating that only BS6 cars can be sold and registered post April 2020. This leaves buyers with no choice other than to purchase a BS6-compliant car after the deadline. But what if you want to buy a future-proof BS6-complaint car right now? We decided to compile a list of all the BS6 cars that are currently on sale in India.
Maruti Suzuki:
1. Alto 800
The Alto 800 is the most affordable BS6-compliant car in India right now. Maruti Suzuki, in April, launched the facelifted version of the Alto 800 along with the BS6-compliant 796cc engine making 47PS/69Nm. The updated Alto also gets some much-needed safety kit to make it comply with new safety regulations in India, which include a mandatory driver-side airbag and reverse parking sensors.
2. S-Presso
The S-Presso is Maruti Suzuki’s take on a mini SUV, based on the Future-S concept. The Kwid-rival is powered by a BS6-compliant 1.0-litre unit that produces 68PS and 90Nm of twist. The S-Presso is available in four variants and features digital dials, a multi-info display, touchscreen infotainment system as well as steering-mounted audio controls. The S-Presso is currently one of the best-selling cars in India beating the Kwid by a considerable margin.
3. Wagon R 1.2
the automobile community
The Wagon R’s 1.2-litre engine was recently updated to become BS6-compliant, with a slight bump in price. Maruti only updated the 1.2-litre engine while the 1.0-litre petrol engine missed out on the upgrade. The figures of the engine remain unchanged at 83PS/113m of torque but the claimed fuel efficiency is now slightly down to 21.4 kmpl from BS4 version’s 22 kmpl.
4. Swift Petrol
The Swift petrol also uses the same 1.2-litre K12b mill as the Wagon R. So Maruti Suzuki rolled out the update for both the Swift and Wagon R petrol together. The figures remain similar but the Swift got a price hike by up to Rs 17,000 depending on the variant. As with the Wagon R, the Swift's claimed efficiency figure also took a slight hit from 22kmpl to 21.4 kmpl.
5. Baleno Petrol
The Baleno got a facelift back in April this year along with a BS6-compliant 1.2-litre DualJet petrol engine. Maruti also updated the normal non-hybrid 1.2-litre VVT engine to meet BS6 norms. There was an increase in price but the mild-hybrid version was also claimed to deliver upto 23.87 kmpl.
6. Dzire Petrol
In tune with the Swift, the Dzire’s 1.2-litre petrol engine also got the BS6 update along with a reasonable price hike ranging from Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000 depending upon the variant. Similar to the Swift and the Wagon R, the engine figures remain the same while fuel economy has gone down by a small margin.
7. Ertiga Petrol
The 1.5-litre petrol engine in the Ertiga was updated to BS6 compliance and with the update, prices of the BS6-compliant model also went up till Rs 10,000 depending on the variant. The engine puts out 105PS/138Nm, similar to the BS4 version, and the fuel economy is rated at 19.01 kmpl for the manual version.
8. Maruti Suzuki XL6
The latest offering from the homegrown manufacturer is offered only with the same 1.5-litre BS6-compliant petrol engine that does its duty in the Ertiga. It is priced from Rs 9.80 lakh to Rs 11.46 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). What it gets over the Ertiga are premium features, different styling, all-black interiors and captain seats for the middle row.
Mercedes-Benz S-Class
The S 350d is the first BS6-compliant Mercedes model and the very first made-in-India BS6 car. The 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine is a powerhouse developing 285PS and a solid 600Nm of twist. The luxury sedan can also run on BS4 fuel without any issues.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class
Mercedes updated the E-class earlier this year by offering a 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engine, both BS6-compliant. The E 220 d makes use of a 2.0-litre diesel engine good for 194PS/400Nm of torque. The petrol E 200, meanwhile, features a 2.0-litre petrol engine that develops 197PS/320Nm of torque.
Mercedes-Benz V-Class
Power: 163PS
India’s only luxury MPV, the V-Class, uses a BS6-compliant 2.1-litre diesel engine developing 163PS and 380Nm of peak torque. There are two variants on offer-- 7-seater extra long wheel base Expression Line and 6-seater long wheelbase Exclusive Line. Mercedes recently launched the range-topping V-Class Elite in India, which also features a new BS6-compliant 2.0-litre that develops the same output as the 2.1-litre diesel unit.
G-Class
Mercedes’ legendary brute, the G-Class in its diesel G 350 d guise features a BS6-compliant 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine that has enough torque to move continents. The G350 d is no slouch as it does the 0-100kmph within 7.4 seconds. The G 350 d is available only in one trim line and is more affordable than the G 63 by a whopping Rs 69 lakh!
Audi A6
Audi took the wraps off the eight-gen Audi A6 that gets a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre TFSI petrol unit with hybrid tech. The engine is good enough for 245PS and 370Nm of torque mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The A6 is available in two variants and comes packed with features like connected-car tech, Bang And Olufsen sound system and ambient lighting.
Kia Seltos
Kia marked its debut in India with the brilliant Seltos which has been doing well in the Indian market. The Seltos come with three engines and four transmission options to choose from. What’s more interesting is that all three of the engines are also BS6-compliant. These include a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol,1.5-litre CRDi diesel- and a 1.4 turbo petrol engine.
Jeep Compass Trailhawk
Jeep’s offroad-focussed version of the Compass comes with the tried and tested 2.0-litre MJD diesel engine which does its duty on various other SUVs as well. But it is only in the Compass Trailhawk that the engine is BS6-complaint. It's made possible by an AdBlue tank which needs to be refilled every 7,000 to 9,000 km.
Hyundai
Grand i10 Nios Petrol
The latest iteration of the Grand i10 gets a BS6-compliant 1.2-litre petrol engine that churns out 83PS and 114Nm and is available across seven variants. It comes mated with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT with the prices ranging from Rs 4.99 lakh to Rs 7.14 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
Elantra Facelift:
Hyundai updated the Elantra with a facelift while axing the diesel engine. But, what it gained is a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre petrol engine mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The sedan also got dual-tone interiors, 8-speaker sound system and Hyundai’s Blue Link connected car tech. As for the diesel, it could get the Seltos’ BS6-compliant 1.5-litre diesel engine at a later stage.
Toyota Glanza
The Glanza, being a rebadged version of the Baleno, also comes with both the 1.2-litre VVT and DualJet petrol motors which are BS6-compliant. In comparison to the Baleno, the Glanza’s base variant is priced cheaper and it also gets a 3-year/1,00,00 km warranty.
